Australians in California
Australia's Biggest Home Away from Home
California is where the most Australians in America live — 24,413 at last count, nearly a quarter of the entire Australian-born US population. From the surf breaks of LA to the tech campuses of the Bay Area, the Golden State feels familiar. The work index sits right at 1.04 — a near-perfect balance between lifestyle and career. Median E-3 salaries here hit $150k, driven by roles in software developers at companies like Google.

Balanced
Work index = share of E-3 jobs ÷ share of Australian residents. Above 1.0 means more Australians are sponsored to work here than live here. Below 1.0 means more settle here by choice.
E-3 filings are job applications, not individual people — renewals and amendments inflate counts. For population, refer to Census figures. Sources: US Census ACS B05006, US DOL LCA disclosures.
